I've read alot of questions, and many of them are so rooted in bigotry I find myself really wondering about the American population at large. There is so much talk of religion and hatred and destruction based on religion, and fingers being pointed this way and that, but how many of these people really understand the issues? The only step between bigotry and terrorism is strapping a bomb to your chest. By perpetuating and spreading these beliefs we only worsen the situation and lessen others opinions of us as a nation. I wonder how many of these people who have no clue about the middle east actually voted... I wonder how many ask these questions to hear their own voices or to sound intelligent... I wonder how many of these questions are actually original and not some regurgitation of what a teacher or parent or spouse said... I understand in part now why our founders chose for our country to be a representative democracy instead of a true democracy... Does anyone feel the same way?

Strong beliefs are fine. It's when they cross over to fanaticism that we need to start worrying.

From what I've observed, there are basically four types of people. Those who are fanatics, those who are sheep, those who are too busy dealing with their day to day lives to lead or follow, and those who sit back and comment.

Somewhere in there, you have the few cross-overs who actually lead without being fanatics, usually by getting people to think rationally and make intelligent choices. But they are far too few (sadly) to form their own category.

The best most of us can hope for is that the moderates who are dealing with life and the few intelligent people who aren't fanatics or sheep will provide enough inertia to the process that the fanatics don't get their way. To that end, it's great to see many of the people here and elsewhere that ask intelligent questions and who give thoughtful answers designed to spark rational discussion.

Hopefully it will be enough to balance out the hate-mongers and those who just repeat what they've been told without ever stopping to think about it.

As far as the benefits of a representative democracy -- that only works if the elected officials actually are acting for the benefit of their constituents. So far, with political parties as they have been for a decade or so, I don't think that's actually the case. Which means the people attempting to lead the way are for the most part either fanatics, sheep themselves, or so wrapped up in their personal agendas that they aren't doing anyone else any good. 98% incumbency rate for Congress. Sheesssh.

Thanks for playing the race card. Bigotry is alive and well in every region of every country in the world and absolutely NO ONE is above it. Those who claim to be supporters or victims of racial bias can turn out to be the most profound perpetrators of such activities. Democracy is just another word for phallic protrusion. The founding fathers inspired Independence based on economics and not politics, so get used to it, it is better than anything you will get anywhere else.

Yes.

Very much so.

It's easier to be told what to believe rather than to do time-consuming reasearch and come up w/ your own ideas.

Simplicity in thought is bliss.
Hearing others agree w/ you is bliss.
Ignoance is bliss.
