I am about done with my master's in counseling (couples and family therapy). You can work for a non-profit doing counseling (little money, but rewarding), you can open your own office and have a private therapy practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or a Marriage and Family Therapist(MFT). You can do divorce mediation, forensic psychology, consulting, life coaching, retreat seminars, university/college level teaching, and many other specializations, depending on what your interest may be. Check out these websites: counseling.org and/or aamft.org to find out more info. You could also write a grant to address a need in the area you are in and develop your own non-profit organization.
A master's in psych. unfortunately doesn't do much good unless you go on for your phd. Social work could be a good option because you can counsel and still open a private practice with that degree. It seem as though the training doesn't seem to be quite as good as counseling or psychology.

In addition to the normal "therapy", a person with a Master's in Counseling could be a mediator for a family court (helping divorcing/seperating couples resolve child custody and visitation issues), be a Parenting Instructor or Domestic Violence Group Leader (these are also mandated for some people by family court.)
