They get lost in the washer during the spin cycle when you do not look for them at every angle along the sides, where they get stuck. Many are lost in the dryer after it stops and because one sock may land on one of the ridges, where you do not take time to look. If you do your laundry hurriedly, the real cause of this is inattentiveness to details. Solution: put all of your socks into a small laundry bag that zips closed before washing and when drying to keep them from becoming separated.

It all started when the washing machine was invented. John Doe was the first to use it and one of his sock got sucked away in the plumbing. To replace his missing sock, he stole someone else sock, from that point on, everybody has been stealing each others sock. In reality, only one sock is missing in the world.
If we all work together to help John Doe find his missing sock, no one will ever be missing a sock again.

Its a snake problem. They hang out waiting for you to do your wash then they slither in and steal a sock. Its gets pretty cold at night and socks make perfect sleeping bags for them. I tired getting ankle length. It didn't help. Then I had mice stealing them from the laundry as well. I gave up and bought all white matching socks that way eventually everything comes out even

one day I was drying my socks and it stoped so I thought ok time to take the socks out so I opened the door put my arm in and that is when it stuck, it tried pulling me in the dryer and I knew if he did I was a true goner I fought with all I had and I saved three pairs of socks and escaped with my life. But the sock monster still lurks for another time to strike.

I know how to solve it there are no monsters there no monsters and there are no sock eaters simply go to the market and buy a package of safety pins. In the socks together put them in the washer then put them in the dryer and pray the pin head does not open or you have lost the whole load.

You probably lost it before it even got to the machines or you lost it in between washing and drying. That's what usually happens to me. I'll find the other sock some day later cleaning around the machines.

Due to static electricity, the smaller item (sock) sticks to a towel or pants or shirt (larger item), thus getting folded or hung with the larger item. You will find the missing sock eventually.
