This really depends on your level of education and experience. Most jobs in this field start quite low (in the $20,000 to $30,000 range) if you only have a bachelor's degree, but you will move up in pay as you go. Also, it is NOT easy to get a job in the field. You have to be top of your class and have good internship experience, but the higher your education the more competitive you are. Unfortunately, there are many more people qualified for a job than there are openings.
It's best to also diversify yourself. Employers these days want people with GIS skills and computer skills. It's a very bad idea to go into this field thinking "all I want to do is forecast" because you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Most people I graduated with that had this attitude are still looking for a good job after 2 years!!! And remember, there is much more to meteorology than just forecasting (but that's a whole different discussion).
Whatever you do, don't decide to get into this field for the money! It is hard work to get the degree and takes a while to start making the big bucks. If it's something you love then go for it! Eventually, after you gain experience, you can easily make over $50,000 a year or more.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service start out as an intern making about $28,000. You are guaranteed promotions once a year for 3 years which will almost double that. Eventually you can earn up to $100,000.
Meteorologists with private corporations (such as Accuweather or airlines) will typically earn less money.
If you go for a position on television (where you don't actually get to do any actual forecasting) you salary will depend on you audience. In New York City you will be making tons, whereas in SmallTown you could be making only 30,000.

If you don't know anything about weather or you don't have the personality, don't even bother.
