I have a violin teacher, but I practice Bluegrass when I should be practicing Classical. So, really, I can't play any one song, perfectly, because I have my music all mixed up. I HEAR bluegrass in my head all day, but I figured if I could play violin music, I could play ANYthing.

I play violin, and I feel your pain. I know that it's not fun to be "forced' to practice classical music all the time, but chances are it'll grow on you. Here's what I do: I start out practicing the stuff that I absolutely have to play, after warming up, tuning, and all that wonderfully boring stuff. Before I start working on each piece, I sing the first few bars of music to get the tune in my head, granted the notes aren't all perfect, but it really helps. It also helps to place your fingers on the strings while doing this. If there are some passages that are giving you trouble play them over a few times. Then as a reward for forcing yourself to play all that boring classical stuff, play your bluegrass tunes. It totally works.

I play the violin. Practice Classical then. So much, that it gets ingrained in your head that you can't even think about Bluegrass. And when you hear music, it's Classical. Practice to the point you will go mental. That is, if you really want to play Classical and play songs well.

I play the mandolin which is really similar to the violin. Why don't you just practice and play what is fun for you. I like playing bluegrass, irish celtic, folk, and even some rock music on mine. Just stick with what is fun for you and what you're best at.

My son plays the violin, but only classical. I think he'd like to play more bluegrass style, but in school it's classical only.
