I see how baby carriers are handy. You can set the little baby there while you eat, or whatever. It can even be rocked. Okay. But when I see little babies getting hauled around in them by the handle like slop in a bucket, clunking against things and swinging around like the baby's going to fall out, well, I HATE IT. Little babies (age 0-3 mo) like bodily contact and it is so much easier to just hold the baby and not the clunky carrier. Thoughts?

I'm a mother of three grown children and a Grandmother. I know there are times when you need to do stuff and that's okay. But to haul the baby around (usually Dads) carelessly banging it around, that carrier (not car seat - CARRIER) is HEAVY. The baby is about 10 lbs and flexible.

I specified that it's good for eating and times like shopping. CARRYING the baby is what I'm talking about! SHEESH.

Guess that's why a lot of kids are sorta screwed up about being hugged and cuddled?

I wish you guys would READ the question. I LIKE CARRIERS OKAY? Just not the BANGING AROUND with the child in it.

We don't use a carrier anymore but I always tried to be as careful as I could but people around me didn't care at all that I had a baby that I was carrying around and would bang into her. I got sick of it and had to just start getting rude with people because that's my daughter in there. Since we don't use the carrier I can give the mean looks and protect her better now, but honestly, other people never cared while I always tried to make space for her. You just see one side of the coin, not the other.

I would only carry her in the carrier also because the car-ride would ALWAYS get her sleeping, no matter what.

My guess is you've never had a baby of your own. Carrying the baby on its own gets tiring for you and them. Babies that little can get tired and sore from being held very easily. The carriers are great and are not harmful to the baby at all. Do you honestly think we like the extra weight to haul around? No. But we don't want to tire our baby out. Why don't you worry about something you have some kind of sense about?

I totally agree with you. I'm a first time mom so when I had my baby I tried carrying him for a little while in the carrier because that's what I had seen everybody else doing but it's so much hassle. And I swear sometimes it felt like the carrier weighed more than my baby. It was so heavy!

I keep my baby in his carrier because have you tried to hold a squirming baby and do something? I do not though use the handle on my carrier. I hold it by the sides up next to my body. I feel like if I carry the handle then it will break.

i see your point, but on the other hand a lot of times it is much easier to bring the carrier. when you have to do something like sign something or fill out some paperwork, or many other things it is easier to be able to put the baby down rather than try to do it holding the baby. i have a stroller that the car seat snaps on to, i love that thing.

You're absolutely right!! I saw your "headline" and thought you meant baby slings--a great device because it keeps the baby in constant contact with a parent and *still* allows you to have your hands free. When you're going to be carrying a baby around for hours on end, a sling is just *so* much better than a car seat/baby chair!!

I loved those carriers. The carriers let him sleep and protected him when I banged him up against the wall.
What I really liked was those leashes that I used to put my kid on. I knew he was safe and he knew that he was connected to Daddy and that gave him a sense of security.

Do you have any children? Both of my kids loved to be gently swung in the car seat WHILE STRAPPED IN. If we were leaving and they started to fuss before we got in the car it would calm them down. Maybe some are too rough with their kids. I would rather hold my kids but while shopping it's not always practical with a newborn.
