In 1971, the first email message was sent. Short and forgettable (so forgettable in fact, that no one remembers exactly what it said), the message was transmitted over ARPANET, the U.S. military’s precursor to the Internet, and served primarily to announce its own existence. It was a humble beginning – the person who created email services says he did it simply because "it seemed like a neat idea" – and the technology was destined to languish quietly in the hands of academics and government scientists for more that two decades. Then, in the mid 1990s, corporate America discovered the Internet.
