Some one mentioned trying the Gutenberg project which is a great idea. There are plenty of free e-books available. But, in order to read them, you will need a software program to read them. There are plenty of free readers. Take a look at PC World's article: "No-Guilt Downloads: Free Books, Music, and Movies"

Generally, recent books are not available for free (at least legally) for the simple reason that the author would never get paid.

There are lots of older books where the copyright has expired here:
