Place the red cable on the positive post of the good battery, then place the black cable on the negative post of the good battery. Next place the red cable on the positive post of the bad battery and last, place the black cable on a metal (Common) part of the vehicle to be jumped, the metal part is usually the little ear above the alternator. Turn the good car on first, then turn the bad car on, let it run for a few seconds then disconect and let bad car run for a few minutes to recharge the battery.

Get the bad car to a shop as soon as possible to find out exactly what caused the malfucntion.

All good answer except one, you should never have the boosting car running. The heavy load from connecting a car with a dead battery can burn out the alternator. Alternators on modern cars aren't built to charge up a dead battery. If the battery is completely dead, it should be charged up with a battery charger or this can burn out the alternator.

hook up the good battery first red on positive black on negative, then hook up the positive on the bad battery, then hook up the negative to the engine away from the battery so you don't blow up.
