Unfortunately life is a vicious cycle and if this is an accurate average it's most likely because:
1) With out a job there is no money
2) With out money the bills don't get paid and you don't eat
3) With out these necessities being met you cease to see the importance of existance
Also depending on how you lost your job you may feel you are not worthy enough to work.
For example if you were fired because you missing work due to the fact that you were already depressed, well, you get the picture.

Job security is a very important thing to people. It ensures that you have money for paying rent/mortgage, putting food on the table, most likely health insurance, and also validating you as a useful person. If you don't have a job and have to go on unemployment, some may view as they have failed at one of the basic functions of being an adult.

It could be a likely reason for suicide. When u r employed, u think that u don't have any skills and that no one wants u coz u r useless. It decreases ur self-esteem. That can encourage u to suicide coz u feel u have nothing to do in this world.

Because unemployment give them the free time to kill themselves. When I get home from work I would be too tired to kill myself. Without a job you can plan and do it right.

because if they're unemployed, they probably don't have any or very much money. Without money you can't do very many things, you get behind on your bills, causing stress, and lots of stress and a suicidal person doesn't mix.

Some of what is mentioned already is helpful but it may help to look at what "suicidal tendencies" might stem from...

Emile Durkheim spent a large amount of time theorizing at the beginning of the 20th century about the nature and cause of suicide. He came up with roughly three basic "states" of the individual in relationship to society around him/her:

1) "Community"- A feeling of solidarity where the individual finds a sense of comfort and solace at being part of the larger group of society around him/her. (Perhaps the experience of employment and/or job satisfaction gives a person a sense of participation and place in society. If one has friends/relationships at the workplace one might feel reinforced by involvement in the productiveness of community.)

2) "Egoism"- As a person is separated from society and/or community he/she is left to face an uncertain sense of self. In the nutshell the individual is forced to face the ego or self. The longer the individual is left to evaluate the self without social reinforcement from his/her community, the more this egoistic state gives rise to self-judgement. As self-judgement increases without a sense of participation in society's milieu the ego gives rise to a state of unfulfilled potential and "depression". (If a person loses their job they might begin to ask themselves if it was actually their OWN fault. If the person feels that their loss of "social participation" has become more and more unbearable it may grow more difficult over time to convince the ego or self that they are still a "viable" individual.) This sense of failure at the expense of the ego can lead to a feeling of purposelessness that Durkheim refers to as "Anomie" (or without a name) that is roughly defined as a feeling of being without purpose and can lead to suicidal thoughts.

3. "Suicide"- When society has "exiled" an individual and the egoistic self is no longer strong enough to comfort/support the individual's sense of purpose or viability, the person feels a sense of depression that may lead to a feeling of worthlessness. This feeling of being without value can lead to serious consideration of leaving life altogether. A feeling of suicide is, therefore, closely associated with a personal sense of value. If that value is no longer remembered or the present condition is considered painful to endure then the self seeks an end to this suffering through self-termination (suicide). (Perhaps suicide is the end result of many people's feelings of worthlessness after losing there jobs and perhaps with it there sense of attachment to the community around them. Perhaps this becomes too painful to bare in some cases and they become convinced that they would be better off dead than to suffer any longer).

This, in essense, is what Durkheim theorized about the plight of those who become isolated from their community/society.

IMHO we will probably never be able to shrug off our sense of social need. As far back into our evolutionary pattern as we can trace our social selves we are still socially needy primates. We deeply desire to be a part of the "tribe" or "band". It can feel painful to be uncared-for or unappreciated and for many this is still a vital need for survival. This strikes at the very core of self worth and is probably one of the deepest relationships one can face concerning suicidal self-conditioning. This is probably why the tendency to commit suicide is tripled.

I hope this helps. :) Sorry it was so long, but as you can see, it's not a simple question. Best of luck!
