I have a few friends who are in trouble in daily life. They always say I'm a great sounding-board and lay all their problems on me. Don't get me wrong, I love to listen and help when I can, but so many people's problems in my head are bouncing around like tennis balls! What makes it hard on me too, is that these friends never seem to want to help me with my problems. They don't listen!!

Casually change the subject, or simply let them know....Look Man we've been over this before, I gave you my advise and you didn't take it, there is not much more I can tell you until you do something. Tough love works.

They don't want advice they just want to vent and they use you. After a while that gets to be overwhelming. What you do is listen for a few minutes and say "gee I have no idea what you should do I think it would help if ran this by your Mom/teacher/school counselor/etc." If you keep saying this eventually they'll get the hint. A question for you.....are they there for you when you have a problem? If not they're not such good friends.

Perhaps it would be helpful if you were very sweet, firm and direct that you feel overwhelmed by their constant venting. Let them know that you really listen to them and you like to be of help, but that you are not a landfill for the nuclear waste of thier life. You may also start "venting" at them about things, see if they will listen and tolerate all of your ranting. When they object, that may be the perfect time to mention that friendship needs to consist of more than a series of whining sessions.

Lay your problems on Yahoo Answers. That's what I do.

Simple, then you stop listening to them and see how they like it. I am sure they will see how selfish they are being. If not then who needs them.
