Yes. In the summer time tickets are often much more expensive. It is not always better to fly on a weekday, but sometimes that will be your best shot. Tickets are usually a lot cheaper if you book well in advance. A ticket for August 22 could be $50 cheaper or more than a ticket for July 22. A lot of times the sites like orbitz.com have good deals, and they let you see the prices of different airlines at the same time, but check the airlines website first. Airlines you might want to check out with some reasonable fares for the most part are:

www.united.com

Yes. Mid week travel is cheaper, and non-peak (away from typical holiday and vacation times of the year) is cheaper. Depends on where you are going as well. Some places are always expensive to get to because they aren't near anything, such as Hawaii.
Weekday is best - Mon-Wed. Forget about trying to come back on a weekend, that is the most popular time. Baltimore is a great town, hopefully you are travelling during crab season - they have amazing soft shelled crab.

yes. if you think about it holidays and weekends are when the majority of people fly. weddings, vacations, time off etc. no one is going to leave for these on a tuesday or something. and holidays are the busiest times of the year for flying as well. so if you were to get a flight to, let's say, somewhere in upper new york for a tuesday, it would be cheaper thanif you were to book that same flight for the weekend. also matters where you are flying to as well. hot spots will generally be more expensive than less than fun places. JetBlue generally is the cheapest all around.

I am a corporate travel agent. Air fares are dependent on several factors. It can be really complicated. The best advice I can give on getting a lower fare is to book your flights as far in advance as practical, at least 3 weeks ahead. The fuller the flight the more you can expect to pay. Its good to be as flexible as possible on times, for instance flights first thing in the morning and around 6PM are in heavy demand from business travellers and tend to fill up faster. Connecting flights can sometimes save you money, if you dont mind changing planes. Saturday stay overs sometime will get you a better fare, but I am finding fewer of those lately. Good luck!

I have found that there is no 'rhyme or reason' as to how airlines price their tickets. But I believe all of the following can (not always) affect the price of the ticket:
1) Destination
2)Time of year
3) Day of the week
4) How far in advance you book the flight
I highly recommed using Orbitz. I've used them several times.
