I've been driving a '97 Dodge Dakota pickup truck for a couple weeks now and I'm not sure if it just runs different from the other cars I've driven or if the transmission might be going bad. Of course, I don't wanna go get it checked out cuz then I'll have to pay either way. It's not making any funny noises or anything really but it just seems like I can push the gas pedal and it just won't go very fast. Unless I literally step on the gas pedal, it takes a good 30 seconds or so to get up to about 60. Could this be the tranny going bad or am I worrying about nothing?

The other answer is kind of right, maybe engine problems like tuneup and such, but it also can be the transmission slipping. check the fluid in the transmission, and note the color of it. If its still bright red, to purple color, least you know the fluid has been changed recently. But, if it looks dirty, and has a strange burnt smell to it, then yes, your transmission is on the verge of going bad, or well on its way. Hope that helped. Good luck.

How can you tell if an automatic transmission is going bad?

That's not a transmission issue you're talking about. If seems as if the engine itself is becoming less effective. Proper maintenance is essential. If you're serious about it not reaching 60 mph in 30 secs, you need to take that to the garage and have it checked out.

A tranny problem would be like everytime you shift, the car jerks.

could just be it needs maintenance. Get a male friend to go with you to a tranny shop and ask for a tranny service quote. You want the fluid checked and changed, filter replaced and "bands" adjusted if needed.

Sometimes the bands loosen and the tranny slips, sometimes your fluid gets low and the tranny won't work right.

If they try to sell you something else get a written estimate and shop around for the best deal for the same work. If you find a cheaper place, pay for an inspection and see what they say.

Be sure to tell them you want ALL replaced parts BACK. This way they HAVE to replace what they quoted because they have to show you the old part they replaced.

Good luck and don't be afraid to tell them "That's too expensive-give me a better deal."

Have your transmission fluid checked. It sounds as if it might need to be topped off. You can tell by the car sounding as if it's trying to breathe, much like an asthmatic person... Also, it doesn't want to shift gears while you're driving and small hills seem like mountains.

Sounds to me like the transmission is slipping. First check the fluid level and check your owners manual or the dealership on which fluid to use. The wrong one will wreck your transmission. The level needs to be checked while cold to make sure there is enough to run safely, but it should be checked hot to make sure there is really enough fluid. Hope this helps and be sure to use the right fluid, no substitutes.
