I know a lot of politicians, both local and national, and many of them are decent people. They work extremely hard in terms of the hours they put in, particularly compared to the amount of money they make. It's the system that forces them to choose between acting like a politician and losing their jobs. To win an election you need campaign funds, you can't offend people by saying controversial things too forcefully, you need to back your party leadership, you need to promote yourself shamelessly. If you ever stop worrying about being elected, you won't be, and the seat will go to someone who works harder on getting elected than you do. Politicians will all tell you in private, that they do not like this and it makes their job very unpleasant, but there is nothing they can do about it.
If you don't like it, you should stop voting for people just because of name recognition or party backing or a good PR campaign. Be especially suspicious of PR campaigns that make a challenger look like he or she is an outsider fighting the system. If someone proposes a reform to the system, a real one and not just window dressing, don't oppose it just because it is a little disadvantageous to your favorite political party. Watch out for "feel good" issues where there's a law for or against something that nobody could dispute but that makes no difference, or that has costs or consequences that make it unwise. Be aware that the party in power controls the agenda, so they make sure that they're the only ones who get their names next to these feel good issues, and the opposition goes on record for voting against them. Thinking of politics as a football game with two sides against each other is exactly what got us into this mess. And get out there and tell your friends and strangers to do the same.

That is the easy way out. Just throw up your hands and give up!
NO! You are responsible to help create a language that can at least contribute to finding a way out of this mess. Our Country, I assume you are American, can and should do better than this poor excuse for expanding freedom.
Don't say Democracy or creating a new Government in Iraq. There is no Democracy in Iraq and we are not creating anything but a dam rotten mess.
Until our President Bush admits his terrible mistake and asks for help getting us out of Iraq, we are creating nothing but death, maiming, disability and destruction.
What we need to do is to explain how America and the World would be better off if we just carefully pack-up went home.
Maybe it is possible to step down in stages to insure stability in the region. But we had better start soon or other events may catch up with us.
We do not want to be caught up in a wider asymmetrical war, do we?

Thats the job criteria for the job, although I do remember one that actually did some good for the people once back in the early 70s.
But like you said if we did that at our workplace we would be unemployed or running for office.
