They aren't normally absorbed by the other fetus. I lost a twin at 10 weeks (and have an 11 year old that was the other one). It was a fluke that I'd had an ultrasound a few weeks earlier or I'd have never known there were two. I've met a lot of women that have lost one twin and still had a healthy baby.

I suspect there are multiple ways the lost twin can disappear but I actually miscarried it and bled for several weeks.

I lost one of my twins at 8 weeks, never had any bleeding, no symptoms. If I had not had early ultrasounds thru my pregnancy probably would have never known ther were twins. My body reabsorbed the baby and by 12 weeks there was no sign of the twin.I did carry the other twin to full term.I now have a healthy baby boy. There is a show called vanished twins that sometimes comes on discovery health channel that talks about that kind of stuff.

ummm, good question, i have had 3 set of twins. this is the truth. actually the last set i had was tripletes, but my hubby's ex kicked me in the stomach and i started bleeding. well i passed most of the baby that died but some didn't. 99% of the time u will abort the other babies.the doctors wont even try to stop the labor.but i did. and the part that didn't pass of the baby was absorbed by the twin in the sack.he now has exsama.it's a type of skin disorder. but he's 4 now and healthy.... good luck...

Well there have been case where one twin is born within the other. It doesn't survive. The twin who does (if it does) is sort of "pregnant" with its sibling and would have to get surgery to get it out. I saw on a documentary when a seven year old boy went through surgery for it. A ball of flesh, hair, teeth, and visible hands and feet was retrieved from it. It's very rare though.

yes..its called vanishing twin syndrome....

Lets put it this way I had over 6 sonograms between 5-9 weeks and it wasnt until another sonogram at 12 that I found out I was having twins..due to the positioning of the twins one was kind of hiding behind the other..any way..had one died and had become reabsorbed we would never of been any of the wiser.

I don't think it gets absorbed by the other twin, but by the body. It could have been released unbeknowst to the mother.
