The shadow of reality. How about Plato's Allegory of the Cave, condensed version. Picture a large cave, a high walkway goes down the middle, on one side is a large fire, on the other side are prisoners chained to the bottom of the wall of the walkway they face the far wall, they have always been prisoners this is all they ever knew, going down the walk way are people, some carrying things, men and women just walking, carts being pulled by oxen, the fire casts the shadows on the wall, this is all the prisoners ever see. They talk about what they see thats all they ever talk about. One day a prisoner escapes, he sees the walkway, the fire and then he goes out side, at first he is blinded by the light, as his sight returns he sees men and women, carts being pulled by oxen, the sky, grass and every thing in color. He goes back into the cave and tells the other prisoners what he had seen, they soon tired of listening to him, they didn't understand, they kill him. His altered consciousness caused his destruction,do people reject what they don't understand? Jump forward 2,375 years and be sitting in Starbucks and es-drop on the next table and they are talking about the reality show they watched on t.v. last night -for hours. Listen to the kids, one says ''yes they are like that, I seen it on the Sopranos''. So what lurks in the shadow?

People alter their consciousness to connect with a higher awareness. You are obvious talking about using hallucinogens as a means to getting there: but, you can also get to an altered state of consciousness through meditation or even dreaming. People who self destruct by using hallucinogens, either are self medicating themselves for an existing problem and or have an addictive personality.

Or liberate their imagination and creativity? Not everyone's a loser, a lot of great art and most likely some paradime shifts in history are directly attributable to altered consciousness. Try a bit of pot a few times if you really want enlightenment on the subject but if you just want to play it safe you can't really criticize what you have no knowledge of.

We are aware of our limited nature. That awareness makes us unconfident of our own findings so we do not believe our own eyes, but willing to believe what others say. This is sheer inferiority complex shared by all humans. Such complex breeds arrogance and stubbornness. So, we insist that what we are conscious of must be different, in order for us to preserve our self-image which keeps telling us "we are limited", thus our consciousness is limited, consequently, what we are conscious of is not what it really is. So, what could it be 'other than what we see?" Thus we are lost, because there are endless probabilities to what we can imagine. Hence, loss and self-destruction.
