In China, and in a lot of Asia, each of the cardinal points on a compass was represented by a color. North was represented by the color black, south was red, east was blue or green, west was white, with the center of the world being represented by yellow or gold.
The Emperors of China were considered to be the center of the universe, according to the Mandate of Heaven, and accordingly, they wore yellow. So did many Asian rulers, however. At some point, yellow was reserved for the ruling classes and was forbidden for anyone else.
Another reason yellow was so popular among the ruling class was because they used saffron as the substance to get yellow dye from. Saffon is an incredibly expensive spice, so only the wealthiest people could afford to buy the yellow cloth.

Nope. Not yellow. You must have confused them with the Simpsons. They like red as it symbolised prosperity.
