In great sci fi, you always learn something about people today through technology advances in the future.

science fiction has wider scope; and can not be contained within specified boundaries. You can not predict the end - in SF. In other conventional fictions - it is easy to guess an end. If normal fiction starts with the sentence, " Will she come or not?" it will end either she has come / not come / eloped with somebody else.
If it is a SF, and starts "Will she come or not?" u will not be able to say - because
the question might have been raised by a computer - for which the " she" may be a CD or a floppy - and if it refers to human - the conveyance vehicle itself could be a new thing - like a time machine and so on......
so, SF is wider, broader and unpredictable - and so popular!

Many of us are explorer wannabees. Many of us are intrigued by the unknown. Look how many want to be part of the astronaut program even thou it is proven you are risking death.
