Yes, if people say it it's because the country is in fact poor but I had no idea! Even my italian cousins have been telling me this.

My family is from the South so I'm guessing my cousins weren't talking about the Northern part!!!

I'm afraid this is completely untrue.
Italy is one of the world's richest countries - in fact it is a member of the G8 group of the world's 8 richest countries.
On the United Nations 2005 Human Development Index, which is a rating scale of how advanced a country is, Italy is 18th (out of 177)
It may not seem like it to Italians, but compared to the rest of the world Italians are VERY well off.

the country doesn't have a lot of industry. it's known for its fashion and culture, and tourism which probably sustains the economy. cities like rome are old with beautiful architecture. what i found was that what i thought i knew about italy was not the case when i travelled there. i realized that much perception was in fact colored by media.

no way. Italy IS NOT POOR. People just say stupid things without getting informed. And i'm sure your italian cousins didn't mean "POOR" as we know it.

"Poor" is a relative term..
In the overall scheme of things, Italy is not a poor country.

Because if they say they are rich, chances are the US and George Bush will feel threatened and try to invade them or something. So they say they are pooor so the americans will leave them alone!
