There is no place like home, but new orleans was built on a natural disaster zone. I wouldnt rebuild it with the risk of it happening again and damaging more peoples lives in the future.

It always boggles my mind why would anyone WANT to live in an area in which it's outright unsave to live... Especially just after it's PROVEN (again) that it IS unsave.
It seems WAY more logic to build a house somewhere more then enough ABOVE the sea level. It would cost MANY billions of dollars to make the current New Orleans situation much more save. What's the point in rebuilding the house at the same place? The next hurricane-season it will be swallowed by the sea again.
Sure New Orleams still needs help. But it's just stupid to neglect the risks completely and just rebuild on the same risky grounds. Look for higher grounds.

Repairing/rebuilding New Orleans is going to take a change-of- heart from the Oval Office down.
That kind of change can/will occur when certain government officials (namely, Pres. Bush, et al) allow the Holy Spirit to truly influence their decisions.
I suggest that you do the following (until the change comes): if you are still wanting to live in the New Orleans area, move near or on Bourbon Street. That street has been deemed (seemingly) the only place worthy of any immediate and lasting revitalization-effort in New Orleans.

Well, if I had loads of money, of which I don't, I would go down to New Orleans and do what I could to help out. You are not forgotten, but I just live from day to day, myself. I wish that I could do more to help, and I wanted to be able to help at the time the disaster struck, but it is like my hands are tied. I am sorry for your loss, and the ache and frustrations in your heart. I hope you had insurance on your house, if not, I am so sorry for your loss. I would be happy to help you if only I could. Warmest regards to you and yours.

to paraphrase jfk: ask not what we're going to do for you, but what you are going to do for yourself. i'll tell you what i'm doing - i have salvaged what i can, i am having my house demolished, and i am rebuilding on piers, eight feet up in the air. what i'm not doing: waiting around for the government or someone else to come and rescue me from the situation. the people who come to help, like the church groups and college students, are great. but you should ask yourself - after almost 11 months - what you can do to move forward.

i just got back from a short vacation in mexico. those people were whacked dead on by hurricane wilma, a cat 5, and got the fringes of stan, another 5. not unlike new orleans with katrina and rita. however, they are way ahead of us, because they have direction from their leaders, pride in themselves, and a strong work ethic. we should be inspired by their example.

You need to locate all those property owners who haven't yet bothered to come back and clean up their property. No one is going to do it for them. If they need help, they need to come back and get their names on a list or something. There are so many groups here who are gutting houses and rebuilding, for free, just to be nice, but if your name isn't on their list of who needs help, they won't know where you are. I know of one guy in Broadmoor who just came home, after all this time, and wanted to know why no one cleaned up his mess for him. His neighbors couldn't believe that he just expected other people to go into his property and gut his house and rebuild it when he wasn't even there. Some people have just given up and walked away. You need to get them to come back and see what help is already here, waiting for them. What can we do to rebuild? Just come home and do it.
