Perhaps you should have gone into more detail. The complainers may have understood what you meant. Also, you could get more response if you posted the question again. That way people could offer more insight into your specific situation.
People taking it the wrong way in the first place shows either lots of distorted minds or the power of irony. The power of irony will likely show up in these answers as everyone will interpret the same way that is different from the way you intended.

If 17 people complained then it really means you ticked-off a couple of hundred folks since only about 1 in 10 actually report an abusive question. Watch what you enter.

Think before you post. Use spell check. And, think again before you press the send button. If you think you are sending a "smart" question, meaning, this question is from a "smart aleck" (sp?) you will get responses... good and bad. And, if you anger enough people, they will report you.
Leave out racial, ethnic and sexual slurs (a sure thing to issue complaints). Leave out sexual and biological comments (potty humor is so junior high). Take the high road.

Slow down..... Think about what it is you want to ask . And if its something that people cant misunderstand in the wrong kind of way . Then type away. It helps to spell check too. okay?

Thinking before you speak is always a good idea. Spell checking is an even better idea. Plus you can check your spelling all you want and its free.

Your spelling could get in the way. Don't you use that little button just above this box?
