Your house has two 120 V lines coming in. The voltage from one to the other is 240 (for the stove, AC, etc.) One of the lines is dead and the other is not. If you have circuit breakers (I presume so because you have push buttons) you need to reset the one that tripped and caused that line to have no voltage.

I had a Zinsco panel in my house and for no reason the breaker would pop. The breakers would not indicate on/off properly all the time. Maybe this is why they are only available as replacement only anymore. I don't think very much of Pushmatic either so I replaced it with a GE panel. These breakers are sometimes hard to find so keep these sites as a source.

Oh, I'm sure you overleaded the fuse/breaker box.
I've never seen a push button box tho...
You need to determine if its a breaker box with switches (houses built after ~1970) or a fuse box with round screwed in fuses (pre 1970)

There could be multiple reasons why it doesn't work. A squirel could have gotten into your attic and chewed through some wires. My advise is to call an electrical contractor like myself and have them check it out. They would probably find the problem in about 15 minutes or less.

Something caused some circuit breakers to trip, or fuses to blow out. reset the breakers and check around to see what might have caused that. You have a pet? possibly could've chewed a wire thru and got jolted too.

You have a blown main fuse on one side, if its an old system they will Bullet type fuses- replace both while at it. (A long tube with copper ends)
