I was talking to my new niece (inlaw), she claims that Yoda is reflective of a Japanese character: Further, my niece is japanese.
Also, could anybody support, one way or the other, whether Yoda was intended to be male or female ? Not that it really matters, but I kind of assumed it was a male.

Yoda has the following Japanese traits:
--Old wise man on mountain type
--force is similar to Ki (also known as chi or body energy)
--how Yoda talks is actually in Japanese sentence structure (preposition, modifier, verb, noun) (When this old you are look this good you will not)

Of course Yoda has some Japanese traits. George Lucas was a fan of Japanese/Samurai movies. As for Yoda's sex, he was male. Remember in ROTJ, right after Yoda dies, Luke is talking to Obi-Wan's ghost. Obi-Wan says to Luke, "The other he spoke of is your twin sister." HE...get it? May the Force be with you!

Yoda is referred to as "he" by other Jedi several times...he's male. The Japanese thing I'm with you; but not pinpoint Japanese. He definitely has that "wise man on top of the mountain" thing going common in most far-east cultures.

yes. he is short and no offense to japanese people but most japanese people that i know are on the short side. plus he wears a futuristic kimono. yoda reminds me of the guy in the karate kid. and yoda is definitely a dude!!!! if they didn't mean for him to be seen as a dude they would have given him a more feminine voice!!!

No way. Yoda is Taoist. Watto the junk dealer is Jewish. There was some question left as of Episode One as to whether he was supposed to be Jewish or Italian, so in Episode Two they stuck him in large brimmed hat and Payot.. you know.. just to clear that up for us.. :) Lucas may be brilliant, but he's about a subtle as a heard of elephants.

The whole jedi order is japanese in design so yes and look into samauri legends and shaolin legends if you want to go the Chinese route.
And he was male, they introduced a female character but it didn't catch anyone's attention.

Yes he looks like Pat Morita (from the Karate Kid). But he also reminds me of my Grandma.
