Here are a few suggestions (not sure if you've read them, though)

- Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (a whole series now)
- The Time Traveler's Wife - this was SOOOOO good
- The Nanny Diaries
- Bridget Jones' Diary (guessing you read and/or saw movie)
- I Don't Know How She does It (similar to Bridget Jones, but she's married w/ Kids - it's quite funny)
- Angela's Ashes (I haven't read, but I've heard it's great)
- YaYa Sisterhood (don't see the movie). She now has a sequel (something like YaYa's Everywhere)

An absolute classic "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" about a young Irish girl adapting to living in America during the turn of the century. Very sweet and sometimes sad.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower--Stephen Chbosky
Prep--Curtis Shettenfield (sp?)
Speak--Laurie Halse Anderson

All of them are modern and are great. I just read The Perks of Being a Wallflower yesterday so it's quick and really pretty entertaining.

Janet Evanovich has a series of books about one character, Stephanie Plum - she is a bounty hunter who isn't quite good at her job. They are funny and hard to put down.
