How young do you want to go? There is a classic called A Little Princess. The young girl is only seven in the beginning, but it's like saying the first Harry Potter book is just a kid's book because he's 11. She gets sent to a boarding school as a show pupil in England, but after her father dies she's left penniless and the hardhearted headmistress practically turns her into a slave.

Being that you know exactly what you want in the type of book you'd like to read, you can go to http://www.amazon.com to find your desired book. All you have mentioned, can be typed into the search bar at the site, and let it take you through the store's many titles.
Often times I've found really great books that weren't on bookshelves of libraries and stores. Check it out, you may just find what you are looking for. And, you don't need a credit card to purchase a book from the site. You can purchase by mail.
I hope this helps.

If you want a really good book, try a book called Perfect World by Brian James. It isn't too too long. It is a touching book about love and fitting in with the world. It might be a little confusing at first because there are double spaces between each paragraph and the dialogue is shown with a dash and then the words in italics; so there are no quotation marks. But it is a really good book and definitely worth reading.

Try Sonya Sones. Her books go really quickly, and I think they are fairly short...usually a good range of emotions as well...I particuarly recommend What Your Mother Doesn't Know.
I enjoy Sarah Dessen...some of her books are fairly short (200 or less) and some are fairly long (300+)...but she's a great author.
Louise Rennison writes a series of books featuring Georgia Nicolson...they've very funny...I don't remember how long or short they are...probably between 150 and 250...somewhere in there. But they're great. The first one is Angus, thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is also great. I don't remember the length of it though. But I recommend it, it's become a YA classic.

Try King Fortis the Brave by Michael R. LaMontagne and Ronald E. Snyder. It's about a pair of twelve-year-old twins that are pulled into a magical land where they find themselves caught in a battle against an evil sorceress that has taken over the land. It's got a lot of adventure and a lot of humor in it and is one of the best books I've ever read. You'll love it!

Learn an new language. So my advice is to go to your local book store and buy a book on the language of your choice. Therefore, you will be able to communicate with others as well as something to read. Let me know what you decide.
