Emo--short for "emotional"--was really invented by two bands: Seattle's Sunny Day Real Estate and Washington, D.C.'s Rites of Spring. As an offshoot of punk, emo has evolved into one of the most popular forms of rock music, and groups like Taking Back Sunday and Fall Out Boy are hit-making, big-selling acts.

Although often criticized by "hard-core" punk fans, emo has an undeniable charm. The genre is more sensitive (if less politically aware) than traditional punk, and appeals to more females. Sissification and horn-rimmed glasses aside, emo has a solid 15 years of history behind it, and it is just now realizing its commercial potential.

Translation for emo-haters: it aint goin' away anytime soon.

Essential Emo LPs: Sunny Day Real Estate's "Diary," Weezer's "Pinkerton," the Promise Ring's "Nothing Feels Good," Fall Out Boy's "Take This to your Grave."

Favorite Emo band- Blank. Emo to me is a group of people who are very sad inside and deal with their sadness by inflicting physical pain apon them selves. The mainstreaming sucks because Emo can mean so many things now!

Emo is a disgusting excuse for a fad. Every emo band sounds like they are little kids holding their noses closed and screaming about problems in their life like its the end of the world when in fact everyone has those same problems.
In 10 years, the little emo kids will look back at their pictures and vomit.

When I first heard of a emo person say 3 months ago I thought why are they trying to copy the style of Emo Phillips. Hairstyle is often the same.

To me they are even more emotinally damaged than your normal goths. They don't fit in with the goths. I think kids are getting way to separationist. I've never seen a time when there were so many separate groups and styles of kids.

I hate the mainstreaming of it!! Damn the media trying to make ur suffering and u cutting urself and painting ur nails black seem cool. Its not cool ppl do it becuz they have emotional problems, now ppl do it to be cool they dont do it cuz thats who they are and i hate it. People like me dont do it to make sadness seem cool, becuz sadness is not cool, its an emotion. And im not saying im emo becuz i dont like labels, but, i hate it when all these ppl run around saying yea im "emo" cuz of this or that or whatever it may be. People who are truly emo dont go running around saying im emo. Another thing i hate is when ppl try to label u as emo just cuz of what you listen to or how u look. A person is emo by the way they feel and the things they do.

favourite emo band....taking back sunday, but their old stuff, b4 they sold out

emo is probably my fav style of music

it pisses me off that ppl relate emo and self abuse "cutting"...they really arent the same.....and technically have nothing to do with each other.....

and the recent mainstreaming pisses me off the most....esp in music.....all my fav bands are suddenly selling out to mtv and top 40....andthe worst part is they have one or two songs that get really big...and the band ends up changing cuz they get big, forgetting about the true fans that were there from the start, and then suddenly are pushed into the whole, when the next new band somes out....its horrible....and i hate it....esp preps that are like OMG panic! or OMG fob!, when they know the radio singles...and have no clue about the band,...and just see them for the one song....

it pisses me off....and its all so awful...mtv turned my favourite bands into sellouts

emo band hawthorne heights emo to me is a cheap immitation of a goth but if your talking about emo music and not an emo person emo music to me is really meaningful deep lyrics buit they have to have a kind of soothing voice and they have to be a band. well emo is...emotional music people think taht emo is cutters and being all sad well i guess it is. people mistake emos for goth. but goths are just unique individuals and they are not cutters and they are generally happy people but emo ppl think they are being goth by being a cutte rand being sad and crap so there for they are cheap immitations of goths! (and goths dont wear all black either) p.s you suck and goths and emos are people and we don't like to be labled either got it gret! hunm i will never take back ne of the words i ever sed nor will i wish i had. So ***** YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME! MOTHAFUCKAAAAAA! -(rage against the machine)

right now i really like "American Football" because I like most things Kinsella(s). I know I am behind the curve, but no one cares including me.

it (AmFB) might be emo-light, but it has the elements of emo that i like--intricate guitar parts, different time signatures/prominant drums, and unique lyrical meter.

I think that term is kind of dead, music-wise. i think it's used more to describe people, and that's fine with me because i use it all the time.

First off, you should try explaining to those of us "out of the loop" just exactly what the hell an "emo" IS!!!!!

I tried to decipher its meaning by reading all the other comments posted here, but none of them made much sense. All I see are abbreviations substituting for actual WORDS, and LOTS of bad grammar! In other words, total NON-sense!!! Can't anyone spell out the definition in PLAIN ENGLISH???????????
