In the field of psychology there is no such thing as 'reverse psychology.' It is simply a term that the pop culture has made up. It refers to the art of manipulation, getting someone to do what one wants them to do by saying or doing the opposite to get a desired effect.

Reverse psychology implies using what you know about someone to prompt a particular response by ostensibly goading them in one direction by what you say, thus prompting an opposite reaction from that person.

It is actually not reverse at all. Using basic (and some complex) principles of the study of the human mind, some persons are able to flourish over other-weaker ones. (these being mostly children and women with low self esteem)

"How clever we are, how crafty to know, to manipulate children, you merely say, 'NO!'"
- from "The Fantastiks"

Reverse Psychology works best with a person who always argues or goes against what you say. It is a way of manipulating a person into doing what you want them to do by making them believe that you want them to do the opposite.

In example, you want your child to do a chore they do not wish to do. You say something to the effect "you are right.. it's really not a chore for a little bitty kid like you.. it's more a job for a big kid.. I guess I will call your big brother to do it.. he is big and he does all sorts of things.. ". this will, with some children, cause them to WANT to prove they are 'big' so they will do the chore. This is, of course, a very simplistic example, but true nonetheless.

Convincing a person to do something by telling them to do the opposite. Specifically in a parent/child role...a child will often try to get in "trouble" to get negative attention...so if a parent has seen these behaviors...it will be easier to manipulate them.

It is a tool of behavior not only talk. Many times people will think or do the opposite of what they see or hear; so you calculate what to do or say antisipating how the subject will respond.
