I planned to rent a house that I really like and is in my rental budget. I talked to a neighbor who knew the previous tentant and she told me she had cockroaches. I talked to the landlord about it and he told me he bombed with insectaside and also put down boric acid. Should I be worried that the roaches will come back?

it is a house not an apartment. I had already put a deposit on it before I talked to the neighbor. I also have to say I loveeeeeeeeee the place.

I would not rent it. An insecticide bomb will not rid the dwelling of roaches. They are simply hiding in the walls and everywhere else you cannot see, and the bomb cannot reach. boric acid is laughable. Even if it worked as advertised, would you want boric acid in your cupboards and around the perimeter of the rooms in your place?

Only a competent exterminator can get tid of roaches for good, and I still wouldn't rent the place.

Good luck with your problem.

Ouch. There is nothing worse than finding a great place to live and maybe passing on it... except maybe dealing with a major bug issues, especially if you are locked in or transport the problem to your next home!!

Not saying the landlord is dishonest, but let's face it, the landlord has a bit of a vested interest here. If you can find out, it would be good to determine whether the treament was site wide, or just in that unit... obviously the cheap route is to just treat that unit, but that doesn't necessarily eliminate the problem, and could mean that the next tenant who is dealing with it and gets it treated sends the problem your way.

If it really meets your needs, you may not want to completely rule it out, but you might want to investigate a little further, or include a clause when you sign the lease that gives you an out or protects your interests if you find bugs in.... a month, 3 months, 6 months? Depends on your lease term, but it might also give you an idea on how much you trust the landlord.

Good luck.
