You can't.

But if you're legitimately concerned about protein, you should be watched carefully by your doctor anyway, and the doctor's office should be doing regular testing.

I had preeclampsia twice, and they never told me to test at home. I did many, many 24 hour creatinine tests, and I had to go into the doctor's office every few days so they could check everything out, but I wasn't testing anything except blood pressure at home.

When I was pregnant 27 years ago my midwife gave me a book called "What Every Pregnant Woman Should Know". It told about how important your diet is to keep from having problems in pregnancy. If you are having protein in your urine, you need to find that book and find out how to avoid it.

What it will tell you is that you MUST eat at least 20 grams of protein a day. Late in my pregnancy I was having problems. The midwife came to my house everyday to check on me. When I ate the 20 grams of protein there was no protein in my urine and no swelling in my feet and legs. The book will explain more about why it works.

As for your original question, I don't know of any way other than the strips to test.

I do not think you can test for protein without the strips. Its not like it would be visible.

You can't, unfortunately. But if your ankles are really swollen, and/or your hands and face, call your doctor!
