Smokey, being a minority working for the Government(not many bears working for the forest circus), was promoted to the Washington Office and rarley makes public appearances anymore. He has gained an amazing amount of weight as a Washington fat cat but still hits a few parades/school events to relive the good ol'days.hahaha

Smokey the Bear is in treatment for lung cancer. The prognosis is not good, but he seems to be in good spirits. Unfortunately the National Foundation had to find a new spokesperson or spokesanimal, as Smokey is barely able to get out the words "Only you" before collapsing in a fit of coughing.

Since the late 1940's , when fire prevention interst started, Smokey Bear has advocated. "PREVENT FOREST FIRES!!"

But not all fires are bad. Prescibed burning or controlled fires can actually reduce the amount of fuel in the forest and thereby reduce the intensity of a "wildfire".

In case you haven't heard, Smokey's new message is...........

"ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT WILDFIRE"

Smokey is still hibernating. Seems he has gotten pretty depressed over the years - with humans and mother nature burning everything down and all. Anyways, he was put on some sort of anti depressants, and at one point a suicide watch.

He was sedated late last fall, and has yet to wake up.

He's around. I saw him in the Fourth of July parade in my hometown-- he looked like he was a candidate for heat stroke! Perhaps, like alot of other Americans, he is having trouble "bearing" the costs of his medical care!
