Well, repeating some of the other answers ,no one knows, but the answer lies in the solution of the BigBang problem which is the most accepted hypothesis discussing the beginning of the "world". BigBang roughly speaking is the begining of the expansion of the universe from a "point",but what is point in that stage? Mach's Principle says that matter constructs Geometry(which includes manifolds and points) "no matter no geometry"(which is not completely accepted by GR(Einstein's General theory of Relativity)since Shuatzchild found a solution for Einstein's equations in the absense of matter).
I must add that the equation E = m c^2 does't simply say:
"creation of matter requires energy, and creation of energy requires matter"
it says energy and mass are equal concepts, but in which form the universe started no one knows!

Which came first hen or egg?.

This type of question is basically wrong because one assumes first that for every thing there must be a beginning.

But one cannot stop attempting to find the beginning.

Your question must be framed as, "Has scince has found the beginning of matter and energy"

But there is a previous answer that before matter and energy there was someting like a ball which was neither matter nor energy.

Like that one can find new answers, but cannot find the beginning.

According to Einstein's theory of relativity, mass and energy are equivalent. So theoretically the universe could start as all mass or all energy and then some could be converted to the other type. The big bang theory says that at the beginning, there was an incredibly small, incredibly dense ball of something that was so hot that it wasn't quite matter or energy, but as it expanded it cooled down and separated into matter and energy. So the true answer to your question might be neither.

Scientists don't know the answer to this question. All they can state at this time is that matter and energy can be converted into one another.

from emptiness.....becoz there was nothing before big bang
the question now is whether the energy and matter is being created now also, out of emptiness.

Some scientists believe that now also that process is going on..though hard evidence is lacking

Energy and matter co-existed in a continum before the universe was created. the scientists are still exploring answers to such questions.
