The fireworks which display different colors make use of various metal salts / compounds such as potassium, copper, chromium etc. Various metal compounds when heated emit different colors. Designs are more to do with the placement of various chemical compounds inside the cracker along with the explosive substance, which is a mixture of carbon, sulphur, gunpowder, etc.

Different chemicals give different colors on burning. So they create it by mixing different chemicals to get that effect.
