Guttenburg...inventor of the printing press! Without the printed word, knowledge would have been held in the hands of a very few, and the disemination of knowledge, the sharing of knowledge via the printed word was made available to the masses....All those brains working as a unit...that is the biggest single invention that has benefited man. Make no mistake about it.

Positive impact: Aristotle. Father of logic and grandfather of the scientific method.
Negative impact: Jesus Christ (because he was so terse and so compact with what he said that it has been relentlessly misinterpreted and used to start wars). Christians are too war like -- the needle is buried too deeply in the red. "You'll see how right I really am" over the next 15 years.

This is perhaps the single best question I've ever seen here. Good thinking!
My opinion, aside from my religious opinion (which would be Jesus Christ), is:
Galileo. His philosophies inspired free thinking and further scientific exploration which has created a chain-reaction of discovery and open-mindedness throughout the world.

Probably the guy who started painting on the wall of his cave and then using symbols to represent ideas, the first Homo Sapien. John I think his name was..
One off inventions would simply have been invented a bit later by someone else but the first concepts were the beginning for us.
