You ca\n't. As long as the root is there the bugger will come back. The root stays alive under the ground and provides the life necessary to break above the soil. if you want to take the plant out entirely the root must be destroyed.

Cut the tree to ground level. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy some stump killer. Drill a hole in the stump and pour the poison in there. It will kill the roots. If you want to actually get rid of it altogether...then call a landscaper to come out and grind the stump. I had this same problem with a pepper tree....sucker was invincable. The stump killer finally killed it after several attempts, but I had a landscaper come out yesterday to grind the stump and another stump in my yard....he even grinded the roots...just to be sure that s.o.b won't come back. I not only got rid of some eye sores...I also ended up with plenty of mulch for my yard. The ground looks much better now, too.

You can purchase a product called Root Kill at any garden center. Follow the directions by drilling angled holes into the stump of the tree, pack the holes with Root Kill and water the drilled holes. In time the stump will die and rot.

Put a paper or cardboard collar around the stump. Let it stick up above the stump about an inch. Put a layer of salt on the stump about three-fourths of an inch high. Be sure that rain doesn't wash away the salt, and replace the salt if it does get washed away. If any branches sprout out below the collar, cut them off.

I used a product called Root Out. It worked really well, but took about two seasons for it to work properly (was used on a fifty ft tree!). Follow the instructions on the package.

Cut the stump down to fresh, live wood and make a 2" collar by wrapping packing tape around it. Fill the collar with sodium chlorate or a product called 'Stump Killer' and cover it with a plastic bag. Tape the bag down and leave it for 6 months, and the stump will have rotted away.
Sodium chlorate is a relatively 'safe' weedkiller; by that I mean that it won't hang around in the soil, it gets broken down on contact with the soil.

I seem to remember a true story of a metal ring or cap being placed over the stump of the tree to prevent regrowth. This will not kill the tree just stunt it's growth.

Don't kill a tree. Trees have souls just like humans and animals. You don't want to kill a living thing. Just take care of it when it grows and make it look nice.

If you do not want to use chemicals or dig out the stump, try covering the whole stump with black polythene weighted down with stones and leave for at least one year. I have successfully removed an elder this way and a hawthorn.

drill some holes straight down in the trunk. we usually pour a little kerosene in the holes. If the tree is small enough just getting rain and dirt in the holes will kill it. try to cut it off as close to the ground as you can. m
