A dishonest airconditioner repairman tried to sell me a $425 thermostat this morning (besides the $95 service fee) stating this problem as the reason why my a/c won't cool. He said that this was the problem because everything else including the refrigerant (Freon) is fine...

BTW, I told him to leave and start another career that does not involve scamming people.

the thermostat could actually be bad. But it sounds more like the circuit board to the furnace has failed. Is it possible the board became wet and corroded?

An easy way to determine this is to jumper out the wires that lead to the thermostat. If yours is wired like 99% of them out there, jumper the red wire to the yellow one. The A/C should run, but no burners. If the burners do fire with the A/C, then your circuit board is bad.

No this is not normal. Yes you do need a new thermostat, but not from him. Go to Home depot and buy one and put it on. The burners should never be on while the A/C cycle is on, and the thermostat controls this.
