It is mostley about drugs believe it or not. Think about it mirrors on the ceiling - they stab it with their steeley knives but they just can't kill the beast(chopping up lines of coke on a mirror), you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave(once you get hooked on them you want more).

Sometimes it doesn't matter if there was or wasn't an original meaning. There maybe no hidden text or subplot. It could simply be a melody of words that sound good together. Everyone puts too much BS into most things that have very simple origins. It's a song. Do you like? Does it mean something to you? Great. Enjoy.

If you don't buy that then get an LP play it backwards and find some meaning it that "melody"...

Have Fun.

Don Henley himself said about this song:

"I came once in the morning to Glenn Frey and he was playing a melody on his guitar. I loved this melody. We made out of this melody the song Hotel California. The meaning of the text is the freedom of living in California."

So much what Don Henley said ... but I don't buy it. I agree with the other people that it is a song about drugs.
