I know the lirics were written by Gus Kahn but little else. It was recorded before WW II. I seem to remember my parents telling me that it was two soldier friends and one had been killed in battle. Today people might think it was too loving to be about a friendship but I think back in those days men could express their deep bonding relationships without fear of being misunderstood. Any thoughts?

It is about comrades, period. Nothing to do with women, men, or whatever...it is about friends..friends lost, friends found, but mainly a cry of grief for lost friends...there were a lot of men killed in that war, as in any war. The song rings true today.

LYRICS:

Nights are long since you went away
I think about you all thru the day
My buddy,
My buddy,
No buddy quite so true
Miss your voice,
The touch of your hand
Just long to know that you understand
My buddy,
My buddy,
Ooh your buddy misses you
I miss your voice,
The touch of your hand
Just long to know that you understand
My buddy,
My buddy,
Your buddy misses you

Yes I do

Gus Kahn wrote "My Buddy" in 1922, with music by Walter Donaldson. While there is no indication of the relationship between the singer and his intended subject in the lyrics, either interpretation is valid.

Co-incidentally, Kahn wrote the lyrics for this song the same year he wrote "Toot Toot Tootsie."

I've never heard the history of the song but I assumed it was about two soldiers as well. It's a nice song.

I learned this song as a child in music class. It was a semester of learning WWI songs. This was one of many. It still makes me cry.
