I LOVE the sound of wind chimes. I have a couple and find the sounds very soothing. Personally, I really don't care if it pisses my neighbors off. It's not for them, it's for meeeee! So, sit back, wait for a breezy day and enjoy!

I know that the Irish believed that the sound of bells would scare away evil spirits. I have read other cultures believe the same thing so perhaps this is why bells and chimes are found in so many homes in different countries. To me, wooden chimes have a more deeper sound while metal ones can cover a wider range of notes. Heck, put both up and enjoy!

metal wind chimes give off a longer ring, while wooden windchimes are just a tapping hollow noise
similar to the sound differences between a xylophone or a marimba

The purpose in my case would be to drive me into insanity for I cannot stand them at my own home. For other people the purpose seems to be some sort of enhancement of their home environment. Wood or metal? What sort of sound do you want to hear from them?

Purpose is exactly what you said - to sound lovely. The aluminum ones are more tinkly and musical, the large metal ones have a bell-like sound, and the wooden ones are tropical or polynesian sounding.

Bamboo is a unique sound, isn't it? We have some, also.
BUT, those aluminum chimes are great! We have some really long ones--they make beautiful sound!

They're supposed to sound nice, i don't personally like the sound they make as i don't find it soothing or relaxing, more annoying! Arn't they supposed to get rid of bad spirits or something like that? ;-)

I think they're just meant to be soothing. Can't really think of any other purpose

The purpose of windchimes is to totally piss off the neighbours.

They will annoy your neighbors. If you want to annoy your neighbors, fine. Otherwise, hang them up indoors where there's no wind.
