I am building my own computer and currently have a 40 GB hard drive. I only plan to do school work (word documents, a few powerpoints...) and a couple GBs worth of games. Is that going to overload my computer or will 40 GB suffice.

First off, the 40GB you refer to is known as hard drive space, not memory. Memory is also known as RAM.

Think of a computer in terms of an office or cubicle at work, and the hard drive becomes the filing cabinet where you store your files, and the memory the desk where you work on the files.

40GB should be enough hard drive space for what you want to do. 60GB would be better in case you decide to do more.

As far as memory is concerned, 512MB would be the bare minimum, but I would strongly recommend 1GB or more if you plan to do any gaming.

if you are talking about your hard drive i would upgrade to a 80 gb as there is not much price difference, and you have room for extra stuff if you need it. memory sticks as in ram you could probably need 512 mb but a gig is pretty cheap. www.tigerdirect.com has all those and they are cheaper then the stores. since you are building your own computer, check them out if you haven't already

40 GB may sound like a lot, but if you put music on your computer, or start downloading videos, music, etc., then you are going to want some more. Hard drives are ridiculously cheap nowadays, so it will barely hurt your wallet to purchase a larger one.

For the future....refer to hard drives as storage. Memory is specifically referring to RAM. You need about 40-60 depending on how much you will be saving on the system.

That probably would work for you but if you start downloading games it will eat up your hard drive quickly. I would put as big of a hard drive along with memory that I could afford.

For what you are going to use it for 40GB hard drive should be plenty.
for RAM 256MB is the bare minimum.
I suggest you stuff as much RAM in your motherboard as it will take.
