the answer to this question fluctuates depending on who you talk to. It is widely known as meaning homosexal, but it also has alot of other meanings depending on the context of the phrase
such as "that movie was so gay", which means it was not enjoyable to the viewer and may have not had a strong plotline, but it doesn't mean 'putting a dick in an ***', as one of the previous posters stated.

Gay means falling in love and having a relationship (emotional and sexual) with someone of the same sex as you.

if you look it up in an old dictionary? its supposed to mean happy.
in the 1920s f*g was supposed to be the regular word everybody called homosexuals. they've since taken the word as awful, and nobodies allowed to use it without knowing they're using a bad word. they've since made everyone and their uncle call them gay instead. except for some people, as rude as some people are, (because it takes all kinds of fruits to make fruit salad, you'll always have somebody totally rude walking around making fun of whatever they think its stupid) have started to refer to "gay" as "stupid" and "lame" so regardless of what gays, or homosexuals, or whatever they want to be called, want to be called, there are always people out there that are going to turn the word they choose to represent themselves into an awful dirty word.
