I started dating Mexicans in 2004 after studying Spanish for 4 years in high school. Here and there an American would try to hook up with me and I kept thinking about all I was missing out on on the otherside. I would miss speaking Spanish, learning the culture, and knew that if I would marry a white guy it would be harder to become fluent with out making him feel that I spend more time with Spanish than him. I am now happily married to a Mexican where I can speak Spanish or English and we can share cultural experiences. (Don't get the idea that I married him to learn Spanish b/c he is a great guy and I love him) But, does anyone else have a story or opinion that once you go foreign you tend to stray away from your own culture?

oh yes, i do believe that once you go foreign, u won't go back. ...i'm mexican-american...but once i went to europe i comletely fell in love with foreign guys...a.k.a non-american. not only european guys but also arab guys, because i had met(summer '05') a really awesome guy that was half arab, half european, and when i came back to the US i saw american guys as kind of boring, like plain tapioca pudding, u know what i mean? i saw nothing extravagent about them.
and i recently came back from las Vegas and there were TONS and i mean TONS of ppl from all over the world! not to mention european guys and other cultures, but i found myself leaning more towards them than american guys i'd love to marry a foreign man so i could learn HIS culture and possibly visit his family over THERE.
god bless both you and your husband.

I do not know whether it is possible to fully stray away from your own culture. The country where you grew up, your mothertongue and the culture that you saw first plus the people you met first are important references for everybody's way of thinking.

Many foreigners who live abroad tend to cluster together in their communities or at least meet at the embassies. So these people definely do not stray away from their own culture - in fact they stick to it - and sometimes even more than people in the country of origin.

Perhaps people who move abroad, who are interested in languages or in learning other cultures, are more open to other cultures than others - not saying that people who do not do so are not interested or open at all - but these people might be more willing to learn more about themselves by comparing themselves and their culture with those of others than most who do not.
Is that straying away from your own country? No, I do not think so..

Having lived in two other countries (but not more than 2 years yet), I start to appreciate my country of origin in another way - and I appreciate the host country also. I know better what it is "to be Dutch" (in my case) - and I will remain Dutch, although I am sure that I will take up some habits from the country where I am living now. I would call that enriching rather than straying away.

I am married to a foreign man and if something happen to him or we divorced I would probably marry in the same culture again. Not because it is a preference or anything, race or nationality does not make a difference to me. It is the fact that my kids are half Egyptian and if I was to bring another man in their life I would want someone who would understand them. Not to mention I know about the culture and know how to cook alot of the food. And probably the most important thing is I now live in Egypt and want to stay here.

I've never heard that one before. But I think it shouldn't matter about the person's nationality as long as you love him. Good luck!
