i'm starting my personal essay for the common application and i know the essay is just one factor of the college application process. i want to know what topics or suggestions will make the essay stand out from all the other thousands of applicants applying to college. many people have said to not go for the usual cliche topics so what are some original and creative topics that will make the essay stand out from the rest. any suggestions are appreciated. thanks.

Don't write a boo-hoo poor-me over something bad that happened to you. If you had something bad happen to you and decide to write about it, focus on what you did to overcome it and how this shows you are a strong person.

If your grades are something other than straight A's all four years, you could explain in your essay why your grades suffered for a time or whatever, but don't be apologetic about it.

Just be yourself and don't try to copy anyone else. Write about you and what interests you and make it interesting. Remember that the college is going to read it and you have to grab their attention. Sometimes it can make or break you.

If you can't think of a topic, then maybe you aren't ready for college.
