Just to add to the other definitions, the most basic definition is that a mistress is the female equivalent of master, such as the mistress of the household. However, in modern parlance, the term have taken the derogatory meaning of a woman who is in a romantic relationship with a man that is married to another woman. But the original meaning of the word is rather benign.
