Yes & no......

"Gentry's song recounts the night of June 3, 1953, when Billie Joe McAllister committed suicide by jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge on Choctaw Ridge, Mississippi. When Gentry and Raucher got together to work on the screenplay, she explained that while the song was based on an actual event, she had no idea why the real person characterised as "Billie Joe" had killed himself. Raucher thus had a free hand to pick one."

That's right, the song came before the movie. Is there a way to find out what the song is based on, if anything, or if was just an idea that the songwriter came up with?

No. The story line in the movie "Ode to Billie Jo" was that he killed himself because he got drunk and had gay sex even thought he loved a girl.

What was dropped was her childhood doll Benjamin. I agree with the others on the story concept.
