IM= Instant Message, theres also PM= Private Message

IM means Instant Message. It land on the persons screen just seconds after you click send!

This is in case you want to send an instant message to someone that is on line. It's a small window that appears which lets you have text chat with someone else.

Well I know you have already gotten the answer to this question (instant message) just wanted to add that sometimes its known as a PM too (private message) depending on what program you are using.

It means sending a text message using the Instant Messenger (IM).
e.g. Yahoo Messenger/ MSN Messenger/Google Talk/ICQ etc
