Had same problem last year. Mine was about 1/2 pound low on refrigerant, but the main problem was the cooling evaporator inside the home was almost totally blocked with dust and grime. Service tech showed me how to use a medium bristle brush and soapy water to clean the fins. The house cooled down in 1/3 the time after cleaning and minor recharge with no more freeze-ups so far.
PS. Freon 24 is still available.

There is only two things that cause an A/C unit to freeze up: (1) is low on refrigerant caused by leak and the other is air flow ( dirty filter, dirty evaporator coil, blower not moving enough air, or dirty A/C filter). If unit continues to run like this it will cause compressor failure, Need to get unit serviced.

Freon levels might be low. However, you can't buy freon anymore unless the repair is done by a money sucking licensed repair guy.

Your filter may need replacement, Your A coil may be dirty, or you may have a refrigerant leak and are low on gas
