It doesn't cause a problem until birth and then the midwife always gets you to stop pushing when the head appears so she can check that it isn't around the baby's neck then they let you push again. It isn't a problem when the baby is in the womb so please don't worry. If you are really concerned check with the midwife of your next visit. that is if you are pregnant.

Yes the umbilical cord can wrap around the babies neck, usally it will unwrap by itself, but sometimes it may not and that of course is not good. Ive heard that the umbilical wrapping around the babies neck and causing death is very low, but Im not sure how true that is. The umbilical cords lenth changes depending on the month.....at nine months the umibilical cord is has grown up to about 2 feet in lenth.

The length of the umbilical cord varies from no cord (achordia) to 300 cm, with diameters up to 3 cm. Causes of differences in cord length are unknown.

Yes an umbilical cord can wrap around an infants neck this is called a Nuchal Cord and it is unlikely to cause distress.
With nuchal cord, the cord becomes coiled around various parts of the body of the fetus, usually around the neck. Nuchal cord is caused by movement of the fetus through a loop of cord.

One loop around the neck occurs in approximately 20% of cases, and multiple loops occur in fewer than 2 per 1000 cases.

This can be detected using color Doppler ultrasound, with a sensitivity of over 90% after 36 weeks' gestation.

Nuchal cords rarely cause fetal demise and are not intrinsic reasons for intervention.

to the person who said It doesn't cause a problem until birth . That would be nice but, it's not TURE!. I seen a baby's burial who was lost at 7 months bue to being tangled in his cord! It is however very RARE sometimes it is caused because the cord is longer then it should be. ALSO when the baby is tangled in the cord the cord gets compressed and that cuts off the baby's blood flow causing a slow death. Often a cord can be around the neck and not be tight or causing a major problem but, there are cases where it can be deadly.

Yes, many a child is born with the cord wrapped around the neck and in some cases causes distress and worse. If this has happened you may be looking at a C-section or early delivery.

Yes, my wife had two stillborns because of that. After the first, the doctor said it would never happen again, but it did.

Even though the cord can get wrapped around the baby's neck, it doesn't strangle it, since the baby doesn't breathe. However, it cuts off the nutrient supply through the cord.

yes, you should be careful of this and go to your doctor regularly. my mom had a still born because the umbilical cord got wrapped around the babies neck and the doctor never knew.

Question one. Yes, but you would have a better chance of being hit by lightning. It's rare, and would be obvious at a check up that the fetus was in distress. That's why doctors monitor fetal heart rate.

Question two. Average is 21 inches.

its not something to worry about its very unlikely that they would strangle them selves but when they get bigger nearer the due date it can get wrapped around the neck but it would only cause stress during labour an at that stage ur being monatered an they can stop any harm coming to your baby. hope that would put ur mined at rest. my guess ur a very nervouse probely first time mam an to worry about something like that would just stress u out. u should enjoy pregnancy.
