We might wonder what we are observing with a casual glance at a wristwatch. Sure, a clock tells time. What does time really tell? Time as no direct measure. How would you really explain time?

First I should say:(With all the respect)
Andrej's answer is exactly what that was wrong with Newtonian theory. Special theory of relativity states that time like position is not absolute. I should also add that it is not at all like the other dimentions of the world visible to us because with all of it's properties as a dimention it still has a preferred direction, non can go back in time or at least no detectable matter yet!
dr r 's answer is quite interesting because of its likeness to the start of quantum theory, I cant's say it's wrong but I can it makes an avoidable(at this stage)circle, events make time wile we use time to map events! And every interaction can be thought as an event which events happen almost smothly in time that it (time) is considered to be continious.

but a simple answer is: do you see the clock work(I mean can it tell you that seconds are passing away? then you can see the time pass! since there is no other direction for the time then you can see the only possible direction!

With time, you are getting into the world of 4th dimensional math, and it gets pretty confusing. You would need an alternate position, perhaps of a lower dimension explaining ours.
So, 2-dimensional math has no depth. Suppose you had no depth at all, and that depth is a foreign consept. Sure, you might think about it, but what is it? The same is with a 4th dimension, which essentially is time. Basically, we are linear creatures, in that we do not percieve of time as any possible way to move, but are going in one constant direction all of the time.
Honestly, this stuff is way over my head, and I doubt there is a scientist in the world today or who has ever been that this 4th-dimensional comprehension is not at least very difficult.

because it's intangible such as loyalty or creativity - I would describe time as we use it here on earth as the relative length of day in comparison to nighttime . Also when using a telescope and watching stars light years away some of what you see may no longer exist and has disappeared since the vision of it began traveling in your line of sight. Time is a helpful measurement for scheduling tasks and making sure you can accomplish them given a finite amount of daylight or night.

It's just a dimension in multi-dimensional system. It is difficult to provide an uncontroversial definition of time. This is the closest explanation by Isaac Newton:

"Absolute, true, and mathematical time, in and of itself and of its own nature, without reference to anything external, flows uniformly and by another name is called duration. Relative, apparent, and common time is any sensible and external measure (precise or imprecise) of duration by means of motion; such a measure - for example, an hour, a day, a month, a year - is commonly used instead of true time."

There is no such thing as time... it comes out of the future (which hasn't happened yet), into the present (which has no duration) and then goes into the past (which no longer exists).

Good question....it's kind of one of those that just stumps you. It can't really be answered. We created time...24 hour time anyway, what we all go by. We schedule our whole day around time.
