bi-polar or manic depression, is a chemical imbalance in the brain. alchohol will react with the meds in such a way as to interfer with the chemical balance the meds are designed to treat. if you're on meds for b-p a small amount of alchohol taken occasionally does little harm but anything over an occassional small amout can be dangerous to your heart and brain.

I think it is because bipolar meds are trying to stabilize certain brain chemicals that alcohol and the body's likely reaction to it (increased insulin production) will likely destabilize further.

For basic information on hyperinsulinemia, check out www.mayoclinic.com and search for hyperinsulinemia.

For basic information on hypoglycemia - a possible cause of bipolar disorder, check out www.hufa.org.
