For that price they are both solid state meaning they have a machine simulating tube powered amps of the past:. Meaning that the line 6 is better for the price especially if youre a beginner or intermediate.

Marshall is a good product, and likely has a line out so that the head can be used as a pre-amp for a more powerful set-up should you need one at a later time. At that price, the Marshall may have a tube circuit, which many people think is worthwhile. The Spider is likely all solid circuit, and many people find that "cold" sounding.

Check both for tone, not volume; idiots are sucked in by volume, the real issue is does your guitar sound the way you want it to through either of the amps. Check the responsiveness at a variety of guitar/amp settings, and try to use the kind of effects pedals you are likely to want.

It's quite possible that the cheaper amp is a better value, but if you want to play with other musicians (in groups or public jams) having better equipment -- meaning name, far too often -- will often get you take more seriously.

I have a Marshall half stack at home. I have been playing for years and believe me you can't go wrong with a Marshall. They are more dependable and the sound quality is better than most amps out there on the market. Look at it this way they have been in buisiness for years so do you want quantity or quality?
